Redistricting

A redistricting plan was proposed by Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature on May 9, 2011.[2] The plan was passed by the Minnesota House of Representatives on May 13[3] and the Minnesota Senate on May 18,[4] but was vetoed by Democratic Governor Mark Dayton on May 19.[5] As a result, the new map is likely to be decided in court.[6]

District 1

Minnesota's 1st congressional district has been represented by Democrat Tim Walz since 2007. State senator Mike Parry[7] and former state representative Allen Quist[8] will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Walz. State senator Julie Rosen may also seek the Republican nomination.[9] Former state representative Randy Demmer, who unsuccessfully challenged Walz as the Republican nominee in 2010,[10] and state representative Steve Drazkowski[11] will not run.

Republican John Kline, who has represented Minnesota's 2nd congressional district since 2003, is expected to seek re-election. Dan Powers, a former small business owner who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd district in 2010, will run again.[12]

District 5

Minnesota's 5th congressional district has been represented by Democrat Keith Ellison since 2007. Gary Boisclair, an anti-abortion activist, will challenge Ellison in the Democratic primary.[15]

Chris Fields, a retired U.S. Marine,[16] and Lynne Torgerson, who ran as an independent in 2010,[17] will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Ellison.

District 6

Republican Michele Bachmann, who has represented Minnesota's 6th congressional district since 2007, unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination, ending her campaign in January 2012.[18] In June 2011, Bachmann said she would not actively seek re-election in the 6th district while running for president.[19] Following her withdrawal from the presidential race, a spokesperson for Bachmann said no decision had been made as to whether she would seek re-election.[18]

Matt Dean, the majority leader of the Minnesota House of Representatives;[20] Tom Emmer, a former state representative who ran as the Republican nominee for Governor of Minnesota in 2010;[20][21] businessman Jay Esmay, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the seat in 2006;[21] state representative Mary Kiffmeyer;[20][22] former state representative Jim Knoblach, who also ran in the 2006 Republican primary;[21] Amy Koch, the state senate majority leader;[20][21] and Phil Krinkie, a former state representative and president of the Taxpayers League of Minnesota who ran in 2006;[20][21][22] also may seek the Republican nomination. In the event that the 8th district changes significantly in redistricting, Republican U.S. Representative Chip Cravaack may run for re-election in the 6th district.[6]

Mike Starr, a substitute schoolteacher, may seek the Democratic nomination.[22]

District 7

Democrat Collin Peterson, who has represented Minnesota's 7th congressional district since 1991, will seek re-election.[23] Lee Byberg, a business executive who unsuccessfully challenged Peterson as the Republican nominee in 2010, will run again.[24]

District 8

Republican Chip Cravaack, who was first elected to represent Minnesota's 8th congressional district in 2010, is expected to seek re-election.[18] In the event that the 8th district changes significantly in redistricting, Cravaack may run for re-election in the 6th district.[6]

Jeff Anderson, a member of the Duluth City Council;[25] Tarryl Clark, a Democratic member of the Minnesota Senate who unsuccessfully ran against Bachmann in the 6th district in 2010;[18] Daniel Fanning, the former deputy state director for Senator Al Franken;[26] and former U.S. Representative Rick Nolan,[27] will run for the Democratic nomination to challenge Cravaack.

State senate minority leader Tom Bakk,[28][29] Duluth mayor Don Ness,[28] state senator Roger Reinert,[28] state representative Tom Rukavina,[28] former state house majority leader Tony Sertich,[28] and lieutenant governor Yvonne Prettner Solon,[30] all of whom are Democrats, will not run. State representative Carly Melin had said she was "keeping an open mind" regarding the possibility of seeking the Democratic nomination;[31] however, she later endorsed Anderson's campaign.[32]
